That's what I thought. Anyway, don't let that crippling anxiety get you, this is not "embarrasing poorly written shameless fanfic that the internet shall forever remember, making you want to kill yourself at it's mere mention" kind of fanfic. Now that you have your peer review, you should publish it.

Ach, it wasn't that crippling anyway. Thanks.

It certainly is. I din't feel there was much to gain by making my short concept-story a prologue to a 100-page "Save The Goat" fic that would probably just end up ripping off One by One anyway. I just wanted to cover a specific and rarely-explored topic that I've always found very interesting (namely, the nature of the Player viewed strictly from within the canonical Undertale universe). If you want literature related to Undertale, I'm pretty sure I've found your guy Although having only written 3 pieces of work, CourierNew has been literally the only Undertale-related author that I enjoy - he writes with a ton of detail and atmosphere that seems totally unappreciated. I came across him on the Undertale reddit a few months back, here are his stories: Day to Day - A prequel to One by One, focusing on Asgore as he encounters the 7 humans (the final chapter is more of a sequel to One by One, but whatever) One by One - A story focusing on Frisk trying to save Asriel. Its very long. (this is probably the only story with this basic plot feature that doesn't have a really corny ending or whatever) Truant - Sequel to One by One. The Underground goes empty. Someone remains. (these are all amazing reads, please give them a try if you have the time) This is AMAZING!

Unfortunately, when establishing the standard for Undertale fanfiction, I think CourierNew sets the bar too high. He's "too" good. But we try, nonetheless. His work certainly inspired me to improve myself. I don't dare to claim my Redemption fanfic is anywhere near as good as his material, but I put a lot of effort into it and the people who did critique it really seemed to like it, so I must have done something right. I'm proud of it.

And the thing is, I wrote my fanfic before I even read One by One. I only read that recently, within the last three months or so. But I'd be very surprised if that guy wasn't a professional in the real world.

Nah, he doesn't seem professional. I mean, there's no information at all on the site, but as far as the actual penmanship goes I'd give it about a 7/10 at best (this is, of course, with 10 being someone ridiculous like Patrick Rothfuss). Without resorting to snobby point scales, though, these's just some little elements of roughness around the edges that makes me think he's a talented amateur. It kinda shows up in the similes the most, I think. Some are pretty nice, like the wind being an annoying dog, but you occasionally get stuff like "loomed like an open mouth" or "shadows poured down...like paint". They're pretty serviceable if he as looking to break up a tide of adjectives, but not really very powerful images in their own right. Again, that's not saying his writing is poor by any means, but it still feels a tad basic by professional standards.
CourierNew's actual strength seems to come more from the way he writes the characters believably, and how on point his use of the source material is. As far as the dialogue goes, I guess there's not much better you can do. His Sans is the sansiest Sans ever, period.

Well he must have done something right to get as many views/kudos as he did. He certainly knows how to use visual detail to paint a picture.

I'm pretty sure he did just about everything right. That's why I've read his story six times (kill me). But I figure it's always worth being critical, even if the person you're critiquing is overall much more skilled than you. That way you can maybe hope to do at least one thing as well as or better than them... one day... maybe.

For me, genuine critique is always appreciated no matter who it's from, as long as it's intended to better the person it's directed to, to help them improve, and not to put them down. Though if he earned a 7 from you, you're probably only gonna rate me a mere 3 of 4 when you get around to critiquing mine. Now I'm scared.

Oh shit, I did say I'd read that didn't I... Sorry. I've been distracted and completely forgot. I'll get a start on that tonight. Also, as of five minutes ago I'm a bona-fide, published Ao3-prowlinging degenerate. Gotta say, I didn't expect to spend two hours reformatting the entire story first, but I sincerely believe it was worth it for some reason. archiveofourown.org/works/9366512?view_full_work=trueLook how shiny it is!

Something else to read tonight. Cheers. I'm about 60% done with the final bonus chapter, been really taking my time with it, and I feel like I've definitely improved between then and now. I'll post it here when it's finished, hopefully either this weekend or the next. The question is, once it's finished, what do I attempt afterwords. I have three ideas I'm torn between: Five Nights at Freddy's Silent Hill All Dogs Go to Heaven They're all equally appealing to me, so I don't know.

Idunno. I've haven't played any of those, haven't seen a playthrough of two, and haven't even heard of one, so the jury's out. And, if I'm being honest, I wouldn't read anything not related to Undertale anyway. I'm prudish enough within the fandom...
